How to Make Your Custom Size Ethernet Cable or RJ45

DSC_2099There are times when you find yourself in a situation where you are using a long Ethernet cable to connect two devices close together like your Ethernet hard drive and your Router. You find that the cable is too long and it frustrates you not being able to hide the hanging cable properly. Perhaps you have a good cable that has one of the RJ45 Plugs broken and you do not want to throw it away. In this tutorial you will learn how to make your custom size Ethernet cable.

You will need the following items to follow this tutorial. You need a RJ-11/RJ-45 Crimp/Cut/Strip Tool,a Network Cable Tester, a Cat5e Network Ethernet Cable and a RJ45 Plug.

1. Cut the blue lining of the cable about 2 centimeters exposing the internal cables

2. Spread the internal cables to make it easy to work with.

3. You want to line up the internal cables like the diagram above according to color.

4. Once you have lined up the internal cables; cut them leaving about 1 centimeter from the blue lining up.

5. Take the cable and slide it inside the RJ45 Plug.

6. Insert the RJ45 plug into the die (opening) of the RJ-11/RJ-45 Crimp Tool. Squeeze the handles of the crimping tool together. Follow steps 1-6 to complete the other end of the cable.

Once both ends of the cable are completed you should test the cable using the Network Cable Tester.
